While in high school, Matt was a member of the Viburnum Quizbowl team, helping to lead them to a second place finish in the Class 2 2004 MSHSAA State Championship. He also led that tournament in scoring.

In college, Matt played for the Missouri S&T team from 2005-2011, and was a member of the team that finished in 14th place at the 2008 ICT. After a year off, he has enrolled at Missouri for a phD.

Matt has also directed or co-directed a total of 14 high school tournaments, including all editions of the NAQT Missouri Qualifier. He was also a founding member of the Missouri Quizbowl Alliance and served as the organization's first president.
