Nathaniel Kang (Class of 2022) is a high school player who currently captains St. Margaret's in the SoCal circuit. Primarily a history specialist, he established the SMES program in 2018, as well as the school's history and quizbowl clubs. He has competed in NHBB competition for six years but only began playing general QB as a high school freshman.
He is a four-time history bee national semifinalist, consecutively from 2015-2018. At 2018 middle school nats, he finished 5th in the country in the 8th grade division, but missed out on reaching finals after narrowly losing to Cooper Roh in the semis. Perhaps his best overall individual performance came when he placed seventh in JV at the 2019 US History Bee, which marked his first finals appearance in a major nationals event.
At 2016 history bee regional finals, he won a close final against Ameya Singh following a furious comeback. At the 2019 San Diego NHBB tournament, he beat Amogh Kulkarni by one tossup to win bee finals. However, his streak of five consecutive years winning a regional title (2015-2019) in history bee ended in 2020, when he finished 3rd behind Kulkarni and fellow Arcadia player Ryan Sun on C set.
Kang also won two consecutive national championships in Sports & Entertainment Bee, in 2017 (ACE 7th grade division) & 2018 (NHBB high school JV).
He began playing general quizbowl as a freshman.
