Tyler McMaken went to high school at St. Charles Preparatory School in central Ohio, competing with their quizbowl team from 2011-2014. He attended HSNCT in 2013 with only three players, ending 5-5, and he attended PACE NSC in 2014 to end with a win-loss record of 9-6. He and his teammates were champions of the 2014 WOSU In the Know TV Tournament.

From 2014-2018, Tyler attended Case Western Reserve University and was active in their quizbowl team all four years. He was president of the club from 2016-2018, helping bring the team to new heights after a number of years of inactivity and instituting a standardized, annual trash tournament for high school students, the Rock and Roll Hall of Shame. While at CWRU, Tyler specialized in music, physics, and religion.
