Perhaps this subject
has been broached already on the quiz-bowl mailing
list. Lots of veteran players, including myself, agree
with your take on the National Open. I averaged above
40 PPG on these packets, so I can say with less
partiality that many questions were obscured and seemed
deliberately so.
While summer tournaments allow masters
play, the questions should be enjoyable to a majority
of players who attend, not just those 30 and up who
wait all year to slug it out buzzer-wise.
In
any case, concerned parties should know that no West
Coast team is likely to host, mirror, or take part in a
tournament if they know questions to be like those which Mr.
Yaphe chose to write.
