Re: A Question

Stephen,

Because you are in Houston it may be reasonable to assume that you're
only highly aware of tournaments in your locality but I'll attempt to
fill in some gaps hopefully without stepping on anyone's toes. I'm at
least hoping you know about the tournaments at UT-A, TAMU and
certainly Rice.

To my knowledge NYU has a club that's rather upstart and has not put
on anything major in recent memory. It is also my understanding that
Columbia has a club that is still rather young but it would not
surprise me if they put on a tournament in the near future. As far as
NYC area colleges that's all there is in terms of clubs. I don't
believe anyone like Fordham or any of the CUNYs are doing anything.

In Los Angeles, USC put on Fall tournaments in 1999 and 2000 but has
not hosted anything since NAQT Sectionals in 2001. UCLA is becoming
very solid and is on the rise - they're putting on an Undergraduate
NAQT tournament on October 5th and will be hosting the West Coast ACF
Fall tournament on November 2nd. CalTech which lives in Pasadena not
far from LA has been and still is very active. They will host their
usual fall tournament in I believe late october. CalTech also
frequently hosts national central source tournaments.

Emory in Atlanta does have a club and I believe they have hosted a
few tournaments over the last year or so. I don't know Georgia
geography very well but I know UGA and GTech have hosted tournaments
too.

University of Washington does have a Quiz Bowl program but it seems
that they do not go to much other than regional tournaments in the
Northwest. They have hosted "Husky Bowl" recently though I don't know
how consistently they do.

As far as Denver goes and the rest of the Mountain Time Zone I don't
think anything goes on there.

George Washington in DC hosts a good amount of tournaments to my
knowledge and UMaryland which can't be too far away does too.

In all fairness, if you read the postings on here often you'll see
tournament announcements often but you are right, there are certain
large metropolitan cities that lack active clubs and thus
tournaments. How to remedy that? That's another discussion.
