Re: The Not-quite-the-Elite-Circuit Circ

We might also emphasize, in reference to the
aforementioned tacky comment, that Sword Bowl was for 1st and
2nd year players only. While only in its second year,
if follows in a long tradition of tournaments for
beginners begun by Lloyd Busch at Emory U. with the Junior
Bird of the 1980's.
 We might also recognize that
schools represented at Sword Bowl have placed very high
and even won NCT's: Georgia Tech, Alabama State,
Berry College, and Kentucky, just to name a few. One
might do well to remember the history of independent
quizbowl. One might then remember that the Southeast owns
the oldest and most storied tradition in quizbowl.
Were it not for Berry College's Gordon Carper and
other SE coaches starting the Southeastern in 1970
after CB's demise, there might not be any collegiate
quizbowl circuit for us to discuss at all.
