Re: [quizbowl] Re: COTKU/Big Lots comments

COTKU stats will be out tonight. In fact, I'm going to make a concerted
effort to catch up on several sets of unposted stats.

As for the whole grad student debate, I understand and sympathize,
having a third-year player who doesn't get to play much because we don't
have enough to fill out a Div. I team with him. And I think I've been
way ahead of the curve in accommodating and supporting less experienced
teams, 2-year schools, etc. However, there's something else I should
point out (as I haven't for a couple of years, but some of you heard it
the last couple of times this debate came up.) Some of those grad
students who play the game have less experience than a lot of the
undergrads. My 5th intercollegiate tournament was as a grad student.
In contrast, I had freshmen last year who played in 6 or 7 tournaments.
This is why I make UTC's Div. I and Div. II distinctions based on
experience. I've also had before, and may have again, tournaments where
the divisions are not completely separated as far as who plays whom,
just as far as who wins what.
Let's mix it up -- there's room for some junior birds, some
2-division tournaments, some undergrad-only tournaments, and some
free-for-alls. You have a strong preference? Run one and see who
comes. Fair enough?
