Re: [quizbowl] Re: question regarding the formation of a team

I would say that if you had about 5 people, that would suffice. As long as you have a group of people who love the game and want to play, then just play.

The main advantage of practicing with buzzers is for competition
purposes. While to start out, you can probably get by without buzzers,
you'll most likely find it more difficult to compete with a team that
uses buzzers on a regular basis.

The art of the buzz is part instinct, part reflex: if you can see that
a buzzer race is imminent, the ability to get to the buzzer a fraction
of a second faster than everyone else can mean the difference between
an easy bonus and watching the other team screw up your dream bonus.
And the only way to develop that skill is through some sort of
physical ringing-in mechanism (beyond saying "buzz" or "in" or whatever).

I'm sure other people can offer better advice about specific systems
(although most of them will tell you to get "the Judge"). However, in
most cases, the investment in a buzzer set will pay off over time,
because the money you spend will be recouped in discounts for bringing
buzzers (especially given that many of the buzzer systems in use have
been around for years and years).

Hope this helps,
