Seventh Annual DSHIT

The Maryland Academic Quiz Team is pleased to announce the seventh
annual David School Hamilton Invitational Tournament, our annual
spring novice tournament, which will be held Saturday, March 6th,
2004 at the University of Maryland (College Park, MD). This modified
ACF tournament is open to all collegiate teams of first and second
year players and all community college teams. Bastard teams may play
with consent of the tournament director but will be ineligible for
prizes and/or playoffs. To register, please email me (Sandeep
Vaheesan) at sandeep_at_....

If you wish to freelance a packet for this tournament, you will
receive in exchange one of the past two Terrapin Invitational
Tournaments or DSHITs. Freelance packets will be due at the no-
penalty packet deadline. To freelance, please email me.

All teams must submit a packet except teams composed entirely of
players who have never attended a non-CBI tournament, and third and
subsequent teams from a school. Teams may request an exemption from
writing a packet. The tournament director must receive such requests
by February 6th.

The players are not required to write the questions, but it is
suggested veteran players assist their younger players in compiling a
packet within the tenets of good question writing. Since this is a
tournament for novices, please write your questions accordingly at or
a notch below an ACF Fall Tournament level of difficulty. I am
shooting for 90% tossup conversion among two middle of the field
teams.

Please follow the guidelines for packet content as presented in the
ACF guide:

http://www.inform.umd.edu/StudentOrg/maqt/acf/documents.html

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have questions about the
packet authoring process. I will be glad to offer feedback and answer
any questions.

The 2002 version of this tournament, subtitled The Quizbowler's Guide
to the Galaxy, was considered by many to be the best yet. This is in
stark contrast to the ninth incarnation, when Michigan, Illinois and
Maryland lost in the first round of the playoffs on a packet commonly
called the Chuckwagon. For ten points, name this largest collegiate
academic tournament, held each year at an eponymous university in
Philadelphia.
ANSWER: Penn Bowl

For ten points each, identify these quiz bowl personalities.
[10] He now runs a sporting goods shop in Savannah. Often appearing
at tournaments in the 1990s with an entourage, he is considered the
greatest quizbowler of all time.
ANSWER: Tom Waters
[10] If you have been to NAQT tournaments, you may have seen this
man, a Harvard graduate who is notorious for questions written under
number 61.
ANSWER: Matt Bruce
[10] He made his presence known his freshman year by leading
Pittsburgh to the 2001 NAQT ICT Division II title. He now attends
Virginia Commonwealth University and runs hsquizbowl.org.
ANSWER: Matt Weiner

We look forward to seeing you March 6th!

Thank you,
