The sport of the mind/newbie team

Argh, hit post too soon last time.

Anyhow, I'm the president of a program really just getting off the
ground (after several abortive attempts) at Stetson University...
~2200 students. We're in the middle of applying for funding, which is
somewhat disheartening -- since we are classified as a regular
student
organization, we can only ask for funds from the school for events on
campus that are open to all students -- this does not include
question
packets, travel or competition fees, or anything particularly
important. Actually, all we can really put in the budget are expenses
for our on-campus event we're using to raise funds...

However, if we were classified as a sport, we would be able to
request
funds for, say, competition. I'm trying to convince Student Life of
this, and I'd appreciate some input from other programs so I have
some
examples to put forth:

What kind of funding do you get from your school? How much do you
have
to raise yourself?

Are you classified as a club or a sport? If you tried to get
reclassified, did you have a difficult time of it?

How did you raise funds the first few years you were getting off the
ground?

We're nowhere near numerous or experienced enough to host much of a
tournament, though we put on a small HS invitational every year that
we don't charge for... our fundraising efforts so far are sad things
indeed. We had one generous alum several years ago put in enough for
the past few years of College Bowl, Inc. question packets and gas
money to Regionals. :-P

Any advice/suggestions?

Thanks,
Kat
