NAQT Eastern Canadian SCT announcement

The U of O Trivia Club is pleased to announce that we
will be hosting NAQT's Eastern Canadian SCT in the
wintry wonderland of Ottawa, Ontario.

All following information will be available soon on
our SCT website:
http://ca.geocities.com/uotrivia/NAQTsct05.html
(excuse the Geocities pop-up for Windows users)

The contact person for this SCT is Ben Smith, through
uotrivia -_at_- yahoo -.- ca (not .com)

The tournament will be on Saturday, February 5 on our
main campus. I would like to start at 9:00 AM, and
our headquarters for the day will be room 121 of
Lamoureux Hall (if there is a very large turnout, we
will meet in room 122 next door instead). Those who
have attended Ontario Bowl in October or CONTAcT in
November should be familiar with this place; for
visiting teams, I can provide directions and post them
on the website.

As for the very important fees (all fees are in the
currency of the school's country):
+$120 for the first team from a school; $100 for each
additional team.
+If your school is new to a NAQT SCT: $100 for the
first team, $90 each for more teams

And the equally-important discounts (same rule about
the currency):
-$15 for a working buzzer system we use; -$5 if we
don't end up needing it
-$10 for a working countdown clock we use; -$5 if we
don't end up needing it
**for all equipment, to share the discounts fairly
among teams, the first clock/buzzer from each
applicable team will be used before we go to 2nd, 3rd,
4th,... materials from more well-equipped schools.
**While we don't expect to need to, we reserve the
right to limit equipment discounts if we find that a
team is making excessive use of the "-$5 backup"
discount
-$10 for a full-time moderator
-$5 if a team agrees to do rotating scorekeeping (ex:
5 or more players on a team)
-$15 if your school is outside the circle shown on
this map:
http://ca.geocities.com/uotrivia/pics/discountmap.jpg
**Toronto and Barrie are inside, Buffalo and the
Niagara peninsula are outside
**This discount can be used only once per school,
regardless of the number of teams

Minimum fee: the average fee for all of a school's
teams is greater than or equal to $70

If you are not affiliated with a school, but can still
provide equipment or staffing assistance, contact us
and we'll make arrangements. We'll also entertain
offers if your school has services or assistance that
would improve our tournament.

For the tournament itself, we hope to split the field
into Div I and II. There is no shortage of D2 teams
in Canada, but D1 is a little sparse. We encourage
some American D1 teams to visit to break that 4-team
threshold (American D2 teams are welcome as well). We
expect to have a single- or double-RR in D2, and a
triple- or quadruple-RR in D1.

Hotels: I don't have many recommendations, as I have
only stayed in an Ottawa hotel once. A good place to
start looking is through the City of Ottawa (
http://www.ottawa.ca/visitors/visiting/wheretostay_en.shtml
). Most of the cheaper hotels are in the suburbs, but
there are some inexpensive (CDN$60-$100) B&B's
downtown, if that's your style.

WARNING: Ottawa's major winter festival,
Winterlude/Bal de Neige (
http://www.capcan.ca/winterlude/home_e.asp ), begins
the same weekend as the SCT. Please don't
procrastinate on your accommodation plans ;-)

Transportation: If you can make your way to Hwy 417
in Ottawa, driving directions to our recommended
parking lot are found here (
http://ca.geocities.com/uotrivia/pics/directionmap.jpg
). Parking is $5.50 (Canadian change) for the day.
If you're cheap and can handle a 10-minute walk in
knee-high snow and -40 windchill, I believe there is
a free lot just off the bottom-right corner of that
map, across Mann St from the Sports Complex. I will
investigate this.

Ottawa has an international airport, a train station
on the Quebec-Windsor corridor, and a bus terminal hub
between Ontario, New York, and Quebec. Once in the
city, I discourage our taxi system, which has prices
fitting of diplomats and foreign dignitaries.
Instead, use OC Transpo, which is the best bus system
in Canada thanks to loads of government money (I live
in the suburbs and have yet to need an intra-city
car). I will gladly provide bus directions for
anybody who is not driving in.

Food: This has been an issue at our previous
tournaments, so I promise that before the SCT, I'll go
around downtown and find some places to eat. American
teams: the drinking age in Ontario is 19, and if you
have a grasp of French, we are just across the river
from Quebec, where the age is 18.

Enough talking for now. I do request, though, that if
you have any plans of attending our SCT, please
contact me with a slight overestimate of the number of
teams you plan to bring. We have a limit to the
number of free rooms, so I can't just go and book a
whole building in anticipation (but we will
accommodate all teams that show interest).

Thank you, and I hope to see you in February!

Ben Smith,

ps: Why Ottawa for trivia? We're home to World
Trivia Night, we have the most SchoolReach and
SmartAsk high school national championships, our bars
and restaurants are often in the top 10 on NTN's
Showdown, and U of O is Alex Trebek's alma mater...
