RE: [quizbowl] Re: What's up with NAQT ICT Invitations

I have three comments on this thread, which has proven more
thought-provoking than I would have guessed initially.

1) First, as the coach of one of the teams affected by the Div. I UG thing:
UTC is of course glad to have won the title, but I wouldn't feel we deserved
an ICT bid based on our performance that day. Now, if we'd performed at
NAQT more like we did at ACF Regionals -- where we finished 5th of 9, swept
the lower bracket in the modified round robin, and had some close matches
against the top dogs -- then perhaps we should have gotten a little extra
consideration for a wild card bid based on our Div. I UG title. But between
our record and our stats at the SCT, we couldn't sell ourselves as a serious
contender at the ICT.

2) At first glance, Susan's idea on requiring a certain performance level
for the SCT host team to receive an ICT bid makes sense. But the devil is
in the details. If I recall correctly, the purpose of the automatic bid is
to avoid penalizing teams for agreeing to host if they have to use their
players as staff Remember that SCT hosts only get to field a house team in
the SCT if they still have two officials per room. So here are two
unintended consequences if NAQT did adopt some performance standard for
maintaining your automatic bid:

    a) For SCT hosts that would have sufficient staff even if they fielded a
house team, it would give them incentive not to field a house team and thus
avoid getting their team statistically disqualified.

    b) It's also possible that an SCT host might need to use some of their
players as staff. As the rules are written now, they'd probably (wisely)
pull their most experienced players and thus field a weaker team at the SCT.
If the rules were changed, they'd leave their best players in the tournament
and put their scrubs to work. Hence the quality of the officiating might
suffer.

3) C'mon, folks, is it that hard to make your points more politely and
respectfully? Instead of "You suck, go study," how about, "Your undergrad
title notwithstanding, other teams in other regions were more deserving of
ICT bids. Better luck next year"?

The SCTs in the East, Northeast, South, Southeast, Southwest, and West
did not have enough undergrad teams present (the minimum is 4) to
award autobids to the undergrad champions. That's not exactly "hush
hush"--it's on NAQT's rules pages. (Also, I think the Rochester bid
on the waitlist is probably due to Fred Bush's performance at the SW
SCT rather than their undergrad team's performance at the East SCT).

All of the teams you mentioned who didn't win titles but received bids
had bonus conversions in the top 30% or so of the field, unlike Baylor
(27th of 66 teams) or UTC (54th of 66 teams). While the S-value takes
other factors into account, bonus conversion is as good as any method
of comparing teams from different regions.

I find it sillier that a team like SFU B (8.51ppb, 59th of 66 teams)
gets a bid over schools like Baylor. (I mean no offense to SFU in
saying this.) I imagine this idea wouldn't go over well, but I think
it would be great if NAQT changed its rules on bid distributions such
that champions only got bids if their S-values fell in the top 30% or
so of the field.

Susan
