Re: [quizbowl] Chaperones

Macon State College has an similar policy. It requires that all students traveling for an activity associated with a Recognized Student Organization must be accompanied by the group's official Faculty Advisor. (Capital letters obligatory here.)

This, when our average student is 28 years old. In loco parentis?!?

  So BGSU, you're not alone.

Here's a change of pace for the message board.

I'll start this post by saying, "I'm not kidding." BGSU's Student
Affairs (who runs dining services, Residence Life, Student Orgs,
etc ...) is really trying to implement this policy. This IS the
school whose dormitory agreement says that one has to pay for a room
even if utilities (heat, electricity, water) are not provided.

So Student Affairs is going to implement a policy that states that
all university-funded trips will require a chaperone, and the last I
heard, this meant someone over 25 who isn't a part of the activity.
Their reasoning, as cited in the link below, can be paraphrased
as "Everybody else has a policy like this." So, I'm wondering, do
other schools have this policy? Replies can be taken as emails to
bgquizteam AT yahoo DOT com to avoid boring readers of this Group.
I'm just curious.

Although our quiz bowl club can probably circumvent such a policy by
attending tournaments as unofficial a BGSU squad, this would require
independence from our yearly stipend given by the university.
