Potential Power Ranking - take 2 (1/3)

Those on the old qb list saw an earlier version
of this. It has been changed to adjust for
tournament hosts losing quality players to tournament
operations.

This is the results of an attempt at a Power Ranking
scheme for collegiate academic competition. Data used in
the calculation was derived from 1999 NAQT CCTs (Div
I & II), 2000 NAQT SCTs (Div I & II), 2000 College
Bowl Regionals, 2000 ACF Regionals, and 2000 NAQT ICT
(Div I & II). These are the Top 40 teams as per the
ranking algorithm.

The algorithm: Total Power
Points equals the sum of the quotients of the number of
teams in a particular tournament and the adjusted place
of finish in said tournament. The adjusted place of
finish is equal to the reciprocal of the sum of the
reciprocals of the places of finish of all teams of the
particular school. For example, in a 20 team tournament BSU
finishes 3rd and 10th. For the tournament, BSU earns
20/[1/(1/3+1/10)] or 8.667 power points, with an adjusted place of
finish of 2.308. In the same tournament, FU's three
teams finish 2nd, tied 7th-8th, and 20th. Adjusted
place of finish is 1/(1/2+1/7.5+1/20) = 1.463, and
power points earned is 20/1.463 = 13.667. Tied records
are not broken, all involved in the tied are awarded
the median position in the tie. Host teams are
awarded the equivalent of a 4th place finish in their own
tournament to compensate for lossing quality players to
tournament operations.
