MI HS state QB tourn.--brief summary (1)

(not speaking for any organization or other
individual besides myself)

St. Clair County
Community College in Port Huron for the 13th consecutive
year hosted the Michigan state High School Quiz Bowl
championships, a double-elimination tournament held over two
days, April 28-29.

Games in this format are 30
minutes long, 15 minute halves, 3 minute halftime, 15
points for correct tossup response, -5 for any incorrect
tossup response, 10 points for correct bonus
response.

Below are the top finishers in each class, followed by
the scores of the final games in each classification.

Class A --

Champions: Utica Eisenhower

Runners-up: Detroit Catholic Central
3rd place: Grosse
Pointe South
4th place: Livonia Churchill
5th
place: Hartland / Plymouth Canton
7th place: Grand
Ledge / Owosso

In round 3 on Friday of the
winner's bracket, Canton scored a big upset rout over
Eisenhower 580-305, forcing Eisenhower to win seven
consecutive games Saturday afternoon to take the crown. In
the first "final" game, Eisenhower came back from a
350-270 deficit to defeat CC 655-555, and in the final
"final", Eisenhower ran away with things in the 2nd half
and took the crown by the winning score of 735-500.

Consider Coach Tharp's team's dominance:

Beat
Grand Ledge 825-140
Beat Livonia Churchill
540-285
Lost to Canton 580-305
Beat Fraser
635-165
Beat Grand Ledge 765-215
Beat Hartland
820-320
Beat Churchill 565-475
Beat Grosse
Pointe South 890-310
Beat DCC twice
(aforementioned)

One loss, two wins by ~100 points, two
wins by ~250 points, and five wins by 470 points or
more. Consider that 19 out of the 25 teams
participating in the Class A field didn't even SCORE in a
single GAME as many as 470 points.

This
Eisenhower team (all juniors, with a full year left to wreak
havoc on their opponents) seems to have the occasional
tendency to play "poorly" (relative to their own high
standards)--witness the Canton loss. The other 9 out of 10 times,
Ike's on top of their game, and they're virtually
unstoppable. It shall be interesting to observe the results of
the national tournaments, to see which of those
participating teams can stay with Ike, and which ones can't.
Churchill and DCC are pretty dominant teams in their own
right, good enough in other years to win a Class A
championship--not this year.
Utica Eisenhower last won the
Class A championship in 1992, having also win it in
1989. They finished as the Class A runners-up in 1999,
losing to Detroit Catholic Central in the championship
game 1085-535.
