MI HS States commentary

It's been quite a weekend. I would just like to
add my kudos to Eisenhower, who I have had the good
fortune to play, but never beat, several times this year.
I'm lucky we are in a different class than they are,
and they are even more impressive when you consider
that Knowledge Master questions are far from ideal for
their extremely fast and deep knowledge of many more,
er, traditional topics that are not covered in such
depth at States. Additionally, I would like to say that
the tournament was as well-run and organized as in
years past, thanks to the superb efforts of Senator
DeGrow et al.
And thanks to the talented team of
great sportsmen from Haslett, who prevented a +25 for
us from being turned into a -5 when, in the
second-to-last game, they admitted that my answer of
"cunjunctive membrane" was acceptable when they had
"conjunctiva" on the answer sheet. As much as I love this
tournament, I truly think that it needs a better outlet for
protests; to cite just one more example, it took similar
opponent friendliness for "sodium chloride" to be accepted
instead of "halite" as "a mineral used to prepare roads
after precipitation and to flavor food."
All in all,
it was a thoroughly enjoyable tournament, and I
offer my congratulations to all the other winners and
all the other teams.
