Volunteering in the D.C. area

I've tried this by email on a private basis with
a few friends, and nothing has panned out yet. As
such, I'll try the entire list.

For those of you
who don't know me, my name is Hayden Hurst. I'm
currently in my early 20s and living and working in
Northern Virginia. After spending a few months getting
settled and determining that I will be in the area for
the foreseeable future, I'm now interested in
starting to volunteer.

Since I enjoyed it when I
was in high school and college, think that it's
worthwhile, and have some experience in it, I'm interested in
helping a high school or college in D.C., Northern
Virginia, or Maryland with either starting or running a
Model United Nations or quizbowl club/team. If
possible, I would prefer to volunteer with a school that is
either less-established or just starting the activity
(to expand the number of students
participating).

As to experience, I have eight years of experience
with Model United Nations (including a relatively
successful one-year stint as the coach of the University of
Delaware's team) and eight years of experience with quizbowl
- with that experience split between the high
school and college levels. I have been involved with
high school and college events in both activities in
the past year and a half.

My personal
philosophy, particularly with high school students,
emphasizes the idea of "you get out of it what you put into
it" - I want to encourage students to pursue the
activity outside of designated times because they enjoy
it. While I am certainly not opposed to success, I
consider won-lost records a secondary or tertiary
objective - I am not interested in being part of a program
that espouses a "win at all costs"
mentality.

If you are either an alumnus/a of an area school
and/or know a coach/teacher/administrator who might be
interested in this, please let me know by email at
hurstrh_at_... - I'm interested in determining what your program
may require so that I can do my best to become
involved. Thank you for your time.
