Hayden's post reminds me of some things I've been
wanting to post. Mainly, I am looking for people in
Chicago who might be willing to help start some quiz bowl
type programs in East Garfield Park (isn't that near
where Hoops Dreams was set?). Since my school only runs
to 8th grade, I'm thinking about starting with some
junior high school students first. This might not be the
typical quiz bowl format, but I am open for suggestions.
I don't have many details at the moment, but I was
wondering if anyone in the greater Chicagoland area might
be interested.
While I will be mainly in
East Garfield, I have some friends who will be
starting in schools in Pilsen, North Lawndale, and Austin,
both in middle and secondary schools. I would like to
get some programs started in those regions as
well.
In addition to helping start quiz teams at these
schools, I was wondering if anyone in Chicago might be
interested in having kids visit their colleges and/or place
of work. Many teachers take students as young as
first or second grade on trips to see colleges or work
areas.
