Rare Entries results

Sorry these took so long; I've been
busy.

We had a four-way tie for first (nobody scored a
perfect 9; scores ranged in a field of 8 from 10 to 14).
So in order to break the ties I arbitratily awarded
"coolness points" for answers I thought were really neat.
It's just a game. Summary begins now.

Randy
Thomson - 10 pts. 2 Coolness Points awarded, for "Carian"
on question #2 (alphabet/syllabary) because it was
the only one I had to look up to see if it existed
(It turns out to be a "Little known Neo-Anatolian
language, attested from inscriptions and clay tablets in
Caria itself, but mainly from grafitti left by Carian
mercenaries in Egypt (c. 500BC), written in an alphabet
peculiar to Carian.") and for giving the native Khalmyk
name for Khalmykia.

Craig Barker is in 2nd,
with 1 coolness point awarded for providing complete
reference information for the U.S.S. Monitor.

Tied
for (3, 4) with 10 points and 0 coolness points are
Chris Baxter and Joon Pahk.

K. Michael Wilcox
in 5th with 11 points; 1 (sadly irrelevant) coolness
point awarded because the name of the star he gave is
"Arrakis" (mu draco).

In 6th with 12 points is Nate
Meyvis; 1 coolness point awarded for mentioning "The
Quick and the Dead" in the Nicene creed, which is of
course the title of a Western starring Sharon Stone and
Gene Hackman for some reason.

Ahmed Ismail in
7th with 13 points; 1 coolness point awarded because
his answer to the Nicene Creed question, while it
repeated with 2 other entries, was in Latin. More points
would have been awarded for the original Greek
;-)

Finally, Erik Kennedy in last, with the only unequivocally
wrong answer submitted: for "A French province, NOT
Departement" he gave the departement of Alpes-pays-de-Savoie,
which is very good skiing country -- if I recall
correctly, it was the site of the Albertville winter
olympics, and the only place I have ever seen snow in July
up close -- but definitely not a province, although
Savoie certainly is.
