U-S-A not O.K. -- by Traung von Dinh

"And perhaps we all at least should be thankful
that had this been a country *other* than America, all
those pretty Palm Beach mansions would now be cruise
missile magnets, and we'd have an armored corps making
its way slowly through New England :-)"

I
imagine if the same thing happens in the Canadian
election on the 27th (in which I am an absentee
"elector"), we won't be seeing the tanks. I failed to realize
that America was the only true democracy, and that the
rest of us are just faking it.

You people
shouldn't be getting all snippy about this. After all, It's
a *great* time to be a NON-permanent
resident.

It's disappointing that most people's response to this
was straight out of the Slobodan Milosevic book of
democracy, i.e., the vote's not valid unless my side
wins.

The fact that the self-styled greatest democracy in
the history of the universe is actually debating
having its election decided because of the layout of a
ballot should be embarrassing enough, (as if the U.S. is
capable of embarrassment) but that both Republicans and
Democrats should take sides on the Palm Beach issue based
on making sure their guy wins instead of making sure
the election is decided fairly is just pathetic. It
can't be a coincidence that every vocal right-winger in
this club thinks the ballot was fair, while every
vocal left-winger thinks it wasn't.

Instead of
the usual platitudes about the greatness of American
democracy (America is, of course, by definition a great
democracy, all appearances to the contrary notwithstanding)
it would do you well to consider the mess the U.S.
is in because political one-upsmanship has become
more important than respecting the democratic process.
The integrity of democracy is a million times more
important than tax cuts, social security, the military
budget, or any other issue.

Dave

Bonus Fun
Fact: In the upcoming brouhaha over the Electoral
College, the terms "Democrat" and "Republican" will
actually be succinct, more or less accurate terms
describing two distinct political positions.
