The 1960 Presidential election

Cites for the quotes I unearth are as good as the
sources for the websites. Many of the journals I cite are
of course biased, unfortunately; I will attempt to
keep my presentation to the facts as best I
can.

"Texas and Illinois weren't the only states reporting
voting "irregularities". A simple switch of only 51,383
votes in Illinois, New Mexico, Arkansas and Missouri
would have given the election to Nixon.

In
retrospect, Nixon wrote:

"We had made a serious
mistake in not having taken precautions against such a
situation, and it was too late now. A presidential recount
would require up to half a year, during which time the
legitimacy of Kennedy's election would be in question. The
effect could be devastating to America's foreign
relations. I could not subject the country to such a
situation. And what if I demanded a recount and it turned
out that despite the vote fraud Kennedy had still
won? Charges of "sore loser" would follow me through
history and remove any possibility of a further political
career. After considering these and many other factors, I
made my decision and sent Kennedy a telegram conceding
the
election."

"prominent Republicans--including Eisenhower--even urged
Nixon to contest the results."

Sadly,
I cannot at this time unearth more material.

I suppose that tomorrow, since I have to come into
work to support systems that aren't even going to be
used :), I will have more time to research this.
