Thanks to NAQT & more controversy [1/2]

Several messages ago, I posted some quickie
results about the Supernatural Ice Bowl held Saturday at
Pitt. This was a high school tournament that originally
featured 12 teams and was initially scheduled to use NAQT
IS-22.

Detroit Catholic Central HS had expressed early interest
in attending SIB, but had to be initially turned
away as they were already scheduled to play in Boston
this weekend on IS-22. Unbeknownst to us, they
successfully petitioned NAQT to change the set we were
scheduled to use to IS-21. NAQT e-mailed us the set a few
days before the tournament, and everything appeared to
be set for an 11 game round robin tournament ...
UNTIL ...

Matt Weiner (darwins_bulldog) had a
burst of insight and recognized that DCCHS had played
at Northwestern's October tournament on the same set
(IS-21) that they had petitioned to use! Obviously, this
was very unacceptable, and it was a good thing that
we caught this when we did (about 10 hours before
tournament start). We quickly confirmed the facts and
approached NAQT (namely R) with our situation.

Since
DCCHS had already begun travelling, we felt it would be
improper for us to summarily disqualify them from the
tournament and face some sort of public squabble. Working
with NAQT via email until about 4AM Eastern, we
reached a solution where DCCHS was unable to compete for
the title and would not play on the IS-21 which we
had already prepared for use the next
morning.

Instead, NAQT very kindly permitted us to use the
Intramural Set for DCCHS games as exhibitions. While not a
perfect solution, this was the best possible one to be
reached with the time constraints on both sides. I salute
NAQT for their flexibility in this situation, although
I am still upset that this situation happened in
the first place. Things like this are entirely
avoidable ... (more on that next)
