In regards to what guidelines to
follow--

The only thing I would suggest is to have them read
the Qs they write at practice, and to provide
constructive criticism (i.e., if a Q is bad, explaining *why*
it is bad, and how it can be fixed). I know it
helped with the freshmen here who were writing Qs for
the first time.

While they're first starting
out, have them write Qs in the styles they compete on.
If they play a lot of four-quarter formats, let them
write lightning rounds. If all they play is
tossup/bonus, stick with that. And so on.
