ACF - Past, Present, Future

Having watched this debate go on, I just wanted
to correct a few things, reinforce others, and
announce some new plans/people/goals for ACF in the
future.

First, I know that we have this reputation for hiding
stuff, which is unintended believe me; so let me say
that the people who made the primary decisions for ACF
this year were David Hamilton, Andrew Yaphe, and
myself with input from Zeke Berdichevsky. Some of the
older guard, like Brian Rostron, Dave Goodman, Arthur
Fleming, and a couple of others whose names escape me
helped out with editing for Nationals.

Now let
me tackle the issue of the issue of scheduling this
year. As Tom Chuck mentioned, the availability of the
editing personnel and their schedules necessitated a
change in dates. The University of Michigan was decided
upon as a host for Nationals (a procedure which we
will plan on opening up to public solicitation like
NAQT). UM's optimum date was late March and that
combined with conflicts last year over religious holidays
and a couple of testing problems, led us to try out
late March as a date for Nationals. In addition, I was
the Regionals editor and had an unforeseen trip to
India that would put me out of the country for most of
February. Thus our traditional Regionals date would have
been only a month before nationals, and a big problem
for me personally, so the decision was made to go to
late January. At the time and in hindsight I realize
that we did not give the community enough notice for
these decisions and this is our fault. For next year we
plan on returning to our traditional dates, and making
more attempts to reach out to newer teams, including a
fall tournament, the inclusion of more people who are
willing to help out, and the implementation of any other
suggestions which would help in this goal. These ideas will
be better outlined in the weeks to come and
hopefully evolve and come to fruition with constructive
input from the community.

I also want to tackle
something Tom said about ACF's elitist reputation, which
I'll do in a couple of messages.
