Re: Quizbowl variations

When I played quiz bowl in high school in San
Diego, CA, we had a slightly different format than the
NAQT/ACF quizbowl that I play now at Berkeley. The scoring
was 3 points for a correct tossup, -1 point for an
incorrect answer given regardless of whether the question
had been finished or not if you were the first team
to buzz, and 5 point bonuses. Furthermore, 5 players
were allowed per team, which sort of makes more sense
to me than 4 players per team because all buzzer
systems are designed for 5-person teams. Also, the high
school teams were divided by leagues and the leagues
were divided into age groups, with Novice being 9th
and 10th graders, Junior Varsity being 11th grade,
and Varsity being 12th grade. The games were timed
too, with Novice level playing for 20 minutes, JV for
25 minutes, and Varsity for 30 minutes, all with
breaks at the half of course. At the end of the regular
season (all of 5 league matches) the Varsity league
winners played for the city championship and the
champions of the various cities played for the county
championship. Unfortunately, that was the highest level we had,
so after county championships, you were pretty much
done. But it was a very enjoyable format and while the
questions were not as well written as they are for the high
school tournaments hosted by colleges, the depth of
knowledge tested was pretty good.

Just thought I'd
join in on the various posts about quizbowl in high
school.
