The best general-pupose book I know of is Middle
East (currently 9th edition), published by CQ Press -

It's a survey book, but it gives a balanced
introduction to the main issues, and I used it as my main
reference for running two regional simulations in college.
You'll lose going up against an Arab Studies major, but
it's a great general resource.
