Re: COTKU 2001 Results Part 1

I'm afraid I'm going to break the old rule of "if
you can't say something nice, keep quiet" and give my
thoughts on COTKU.

Charlie and his crew did an
excellent job once again of running a tournament--I don't
think anyone could complain about the effort and
efficiency that he puts into organization and
hospitality.

With that said, the Ben Lea written/edited packets
almost made CBI packets look good. I'm not officially
speaking for FSU of course, but I don't know anyone who
disagrees with this assessment. They were abysmal and made
me wish that I hadn't bothered to waste a weekend.
Ben may be a fine person, I don't know him, but don't
ever, ever claim that your packets are ACF style and
then make them 40-50% trash in content (I'm not
exaggerating--a tossup containing an academic answer but with no
genuine clues and a trash giveaway is not an academic
tossup). Fact-check your questions and don't write hoses
(of which there were many). Don't write a six line
tossup with two clues. (There were many questions of the
"he was known for his attempts to challenge the
status quo in his writing, his use of irony, yada yada
yada).
