Although not Junior Birds per se, I think that
all-undergrad tournaments help to reduce stompage quite a lot.
For example, at the Don King undergrad tourney at
Case, there were many younger faces who quite possibly
were getting their first taste of Trash. More
importantly, though, there was much less talk of "the circuit"
and "the canon"; nearly no questions about
such-and-such circuit player from his web site (although there
was a 1/1 requirement originally about this); and the
in-jokes were kept to a safe minimum.
Trash is the
one area where new players are quickly shocked and
often discouraged at the number of Old People they see
at tournaments. By maintaining undergrad-only
tournaments, we ensure that we don't alienate new players so
quickly.
