ACF Fall: accessible for newcomers

I speak here not only as the tournament director
of ACF Fall Midsouth, but also as the coach of the
last-place team in Division II. I'm sorry Stan & DePauw had
the experience they did at their regional, but it was
not the fault of ACF. I can say this for certain
because our experience was completely the opposite. Fully
half the 12 teams at Midsouth were Division II
eligible. In fact, only 9 of the 41 players present had
more than two years of experience, and I believe there
was only one grad student in the entire field. All
teams played in the same round robin regardless of
division status. While the Division I players and teams
generally did better, the MVP was a D II player -- a
freshman, in fact, playing in his first intercollegiate
tournament. He went 7-4, including two victories against D I
teams.
I did not hear a single complaint from the newer
players about either the margins of victory or the
attitudes of the veteran teams. The feedback I got was that
the bonuses were pretty tough, but the tossups were
gettable.
Hats off to Kelly McKenzie for a well-written
tournament with few glitches and a level of difficulty that
matched what was advertised. For those who didn't notice,
not very many teams submitted packets, so Kelly wound
up writing almost as much as editing and deserves
extra credit for the amount of effort this one took.
