Lies

<<

8. Lies. This was the real
experiment. There was on average 1 per pack. There were some
non-standard lead-ins which were in fact true. I don't think
this should necessarily become widespread, but I don't
know that it shouldn't be repeated either. Thus far
the votes are mixed. I'd be interested in hearing the
outcome of playing it in practice. If I hear that
scientists discovered another constellation in someone
else's pack however, I will know its been
plagiarized.>>

This was the thing that upset me most about the Deep
Bench questions used at Technophobia. What, pray tell,
is the purpose of such a lead in? Fortunately, we
were warned about this by the moderators, but a false
lead-in can very easily lead to a hose, and everyone, so
far as I know, hates that. Non-standard lead-ins that
are true are great, but I personally see lead-ins
containing intentionally false information as anathema to
the spirit of quiz bowl.
