Re: Tips for a new club...?

Your best bet (though I have a bias here :-)) is
to probably attend a juniorbird event in your area,
especially one that uses NAQT Invitational Series questions.
Check this bulletin board for tourney announcements and
also http://www.naqt.com/schedule.asp

Mapquest
lists Northfield, MN, as 12-hour drive from Xavier;
nonetheless, if you're rarin' to go, the Carleton
Ungraduatuate Tournament is probably a good fit.

Other
events worth noting:
NAQT has hosted sectional
tournaments every February since 1998 (and November 1996
before that). NO AFFILIATION FEE IS REQUIRED*. Entry fee
set by the host, typically in the high double digits
per team. Those who win, or do well, at NAQT SCT, are
invited to the Intercollegiate Championship Tournament,
held every April since 1998 (and January 1997 before
that).

*- This disclaimer, "No affiliation fee required,"
seems to apply to EVERY event outside of CBCI. As teams
start to play outside of ACUI/CBCI, I imagine one of
the first things they notice is the opposite of
sticker shock.

Although NAQT did not sponsor any
fall collegiate tournament this year, it has done so
in the past.

This year, ACF hosted a fall
tournament in addition to its regional and championship
cyles. Also, as many people have mentioned, lots of
colleges host independent invitational tournaments just
for the sake of doing so.

For a fledgling
team, the biggest drawback to an invitational
tournament (maybe also to ACF) is the packet submission
requirement. As membership in your club expands, many people
will want to play but they'll be highly reluctant to
write.

On the other hand, writing questions is (in my
opinion) by far the best way to improve as a player. Once
in awhile I'll play in a masters-type event. Apart
from that and a lot of question writing, I don't
practice or prepare for quiz tournaments anymore --
nothing in particular to prepare for. :-) So when a
master's event does come along, a huge % of the questions
I actually get will be questions that I got because
I remembered writing a similar question on the same
topic.
