Viability gets you a better chance of being
picked, but the randomness of the autobid process ensures
that there will always be upsets. In the Canadian
conference, for example, Simon Fraser is a regional
hosting/winning circuit team (as much as a team in the Pacific
Northwest can be one), and so is UWO. Queen's also sent a
strong contingent to the NAQT SCT a few weeks ago, yet
it was McGill, Capt. Kirk's old school, that got an
autobid despite not even having a quizbowl
program.
And for the purposes of this game, this is fine. It's
not like we're missing out on any tournaments or
anything, right? ;-)
