You are, in fact, mistaken. :)
Verklärte Nacht was originally scored for double string trio (i.e.,
two violins, two violas, and two cellos), but no soprano. The soprano
solo you're thinking of belongs to the String Quartet No. 2. [Yes,
it's a string quartet, and it comes with a soprano solo. Deal. :) ]
