Prior to the 2014 VHSL Realignment, VHSL Region III was a VHSL region in class AA, consisting of schools with 700 to 1500 students lying from west of the Charlottesville area to the eastern part of the Roanoke area. It contained the Blue Ridge District, Seminole District, and Valley District. Like all VHSL regions, it sent two teams to the VHSL Scholastic Bowl state championship tournament for the sixteen-year duration of the original Scholastic Bowl tournament structure.

State tournament placement
Teams from Region III won the Class AA state tournament in 1999 (Blacksburg) and 2003 (Salem).
