Farragut High School is a public high school located in the suburbs of Knoxville, TN. Farragut is known for several recent high finishes at various National Championships: the History Bowl team finished 2nd in the 2014 JV History Bowl, Daniel Yan won the 2014 JV History Bee, the quizbowl team finished 8th at the 2014 PACE NSC, and the History Bowl team finished 5th at the 2015 Varsity History Bowl. They have been regionally active since 2008 and recently have attended several Quizbowl and History Bowl National Championships.
2013 History Bowl and History Bee Nationals
Farragut attended the History Bowl and History Bee National Championships for the first time in 2013. The JV team was ranked quite low going into the competition after finishing 1-3 and scoring 400 points at the Tennessee State Championships due to stiff competition from Tennessee varsity powerhouses. The team surprised many by finishing 9th at the 2014 JV History Bowl National Championships with a team of only three freshmen: captain Daniel Yan, Yongyu Chen, and Kevin Hong. Yongyu Chen was also a semifinalist in the Geography Olympiad, and Daniel Yan was a quarterfinalist in the History Bee.
2013 HSNCT
At the 2013 HSNCT they tied for 50th with a team of captain Lawrence Wang(57.42 ppg), Kai Smith(20.31 ppg), Lam Tran(12.50 ppg), M.J. Badgett(8.66 ppg), and Akshay Soni(6.20 ppg). Captain Lawrence Wang was also named an All-Star for his excellent performance.
2014 History Bowl and History Bee Nationals
Farragut entered the 2014 National History Bowl as the 9th ranked team on the Madden rankings. The team consisted of captain Daniel Yan(10), Kevin Hong(10), Ronik Sheth(10), and Yongyu Chen(10). The team finished first in the preliminaries after going undefeated, and then finished first in the afternoon rounds by going 5-0 and scoring the most points. Farragut then breezed through the first through playoff rounds with a margin of victory of over 100 pts in each rounds before losing in the finals to Westview, 270-190. The second place finish in the 2014 JV History Bowl National Championships is the highest finish ever by Farragut at any National Championships.
In the individual competition, Daniel Yan was a semifinalist in the US History Bee.
In the 2014 JV History Bee National Championships, Daniel Yan scored the second most points in the preliminaries. He then won his quarterfinal group. In the semifinals, he finished in a three-way tie with two other players after 30 questions, but only two players could enter the finals. The three players played a sudden death tiebreaker, and he answered the first question(which was on J. Edgar Hoover) to advance to the finals. Chandler Burrows answered the third question after the second question went dead to advance as the other finalist. In the finals, Daniel Yan won 12-7 over Chandler to become the 2014 JV History Bee National Champion. Daniel answered with a winning buzz of "English pirates."
