The 1998 MSHSAA State Championship was held May 9, 1998 at Columbia College in Columbia.
Information on this page is reconstructed from limited available data and may not be completely accurate. Known team records are inferred from the 2001 state program, which listed the years each school participated in the tournament and cumulative records for 1996-99. Classifications for teams that did not make the top four brackets are inferred from the earliest available enrollment data (from 2000-02) and known classifications in later tournaments. Playoff brackets from the MSHSAA website usually display the semifinal games as 1v4 and 3v2, in that order top-to-bottom, but that may not be reliable for the 1998 brackets.

It is possible that inferring this seeding from the bracket on the MSHSAA website is inaccurate. The 2001 state program states that only two schools had upset a #1 seed in bracket play from 1996-99; however, if semifinal games are consistently shown on the website as 1v4 and 3v2, there were three such instances, with the other two occurring in 1999. Additionally, if this seeding is correct, then no teams went 3-0 this year and the 1999 bracket seeding must be inaccurate, because Francis Howell North must have had a 2-1 preliminary record in 1998 to account for all twelve wins, and thus would have had a 2-1 preliminary record in 1999 as the #2 seed, but Blue Springs also must have gone 3-0 that year while assumed to be the #3 seed.
Semifinals
(4) North County 305, (1) Marquette 300
(3) North Kansas City 430, (2) Blue Springs 170
Consolation
(2) Blue Springs 425, (1) Marquette 210
Championship Game
(3) North Kansas City 495, (4) North County 135
Known Individual Totals
Andy Wehrman, North Kansas City junior, answered 90 tossups correctly (18/game), second-most all time to date behind his brother Mike, who had 133 in 1997.
Ryan Manuel from Blue Springs answered 71 tossups correctly, third-most all time to date.
Joshlin Yoder of North Shelby answered 55 tossups correctly, setting a Class 1A record.
No other player answered more than 70 tossups correctly.
Records and notes
- The same four schools won state championships for the third consecutive year, dating back to the first tournament in 1996. This streak ended the next year when Cuba did not advance past districts.
- If the brackets on the MSHSAA website consistently list the semifinal matches as 1v4 and 3v2, this was the first time that a one seed was defeated in the playoff bracket (Marquette in Class 4A). The 2001 state program notes that only two schools had upset a one seed from 1996-99, but if the website reliably shows seeding as assumed, there were actually three, with two more occurring in 1999. See additional discussion in the Class 4A section.
- Cuba's 2305 points over five rounds was third all-time, behind North Kansas City's 2510 points in 1997 and Cuba's 2360 points in 1996.
- Richland's 480 points against Valle Catholic in round 1 set a Class 2A single-game record. Richland broke this record with a 550 point game in 2001.
- Joshlin Yoder from North Shelby set a Class 1A record with 16 correct tossup answers in Round 3 vs. Koshkonong. This record was also broken in 2001.

- ↑ The 2001 program shows a cumulative record of 8-5 for North Shelby for their appearances in 1996 through 1998. North Shelby did not make the final four in 1996 and also finished in second place in 1997.
- ↑ The 2001 program shows a cumulative record of 10-8 for Pilot Grove for their appearances in 1996 through 1999.
- ↑ The 2001 program shows a cumulative record of 6-7 for Norborne for their appearances in 1997 through 1999. Norborne also finished in third place in 1997 and did not make the final four in 1997. They most likely went 3-2 in 1997 and 1998, and 0-3 in 1999.
- ↑ The 2001 program shows a cumulative record of 7-7 for Union Star for their appearances in 1996 through 1999. Their third place finish in 1996 was their only final four appearance over that time, so they won three or four games over their three other appearances. It is possible they could have gone 0-3, but that would mean they missed the playoffs with a 2-1 record in one of the other years.
- ↑ The 2001 program shows a cumulative record of 2-9 for Koshkonong for their appearances in 1997 through 1999. Koshkonong finished in fourth place in 1999, so they most likely went 2-3 that year, leaving a record of 0-3 for the other two appearances.
- ↑ The 2001 program shows a cumulative record of 19-1 for Richland for their appearances from 1996 through 1999. Assuming seeding was inferred correctly from the website bracket, it is unlikely Richland lost this year based on the possible records of other teams.
- ↑ The 2001 program shows a cumulative record of 7-3 for North Platte for their appearances in 1998 and 1999. They finished in second place in 1998 and third place in 1999, meaning they went 3-0 in the prelims one year and 2-1 the other year. 2-1 is assumed based on the website bracket implying North Platte was the two seed in 1998 and the one seed in 1999.
- ↑ The 2001 program shows a cumulative record of 6-4 for Elsberry for their appearances in 1998 and 1999. They finished in third place in 1998 and second place in 1999, meaning they lost two preliminary games total. Due to the known records of Ash Grove and Valle Catholic, it is not possible for more than one team to have a 3-0 preliminary record.
- ↑ The 2001 program shows a cumulative record of 6-2 for Ash Grove for their appearances in 1997 and 1998. Ash Grove finished in third place in 1997, so a record of 4-1 in 1997 and 2-1 in 1998 is the only possibility.
- ↑ The 2001 program shows a cumulative record of 5-11 for Lockwood for their appearances in 1996 through 1999. They finished fourth in 1996 and second in 1997, so they most likely went 2-3 in 1996, 3-2 in 1997, and 0-3 in 1998 and 1999. If Lockwood went 1-2 in 1998, then neither Richland or North Platte could have been 3-0.
- ↑ The 2001 program shows a cumulative record of 12-8 for Lexington for their appearances in 1996 through 1999.
- ↑ The 2001 program shows a cumulative record of 6-7 for Butler for their appearances in 1996 through 1998.
- ↑ The 2001 program shows a cumulative record of 5-6 for New Madrid County Central for their appearances in 1996 through 1998.
- ↑ The 2001 program shows a cumulative record of 2-4 for School of the Osage for their appearances in 1998 and 1999.
- ↑ The 2001 program shows a cumulative record of 9-7 for Priory for their appearances in 1996 through 1999.
- ↑ The 2001 state program shows Marquette had a record of 5-5 for their appearances in 1997 and 1998. Available data from 1997 shows that Marquette must have had a 3-2 record that year, so with a fourth place finish in 1998, that leaves a 2-1 preliminary record.
- ↑ The 2001 program shows a cumulative record of 7-3 for Blue Springs for their appearances in 1998 and 1999. They finished in third place in 1998 and second place in 1999, meaning they went 3-0 in the prelims one year and 2-1 the other year.
- ↑ The 2001 state program shows North Kansas City had a record of 19-1 from 1996-99. If seeding can be inferred reliably from the MSHSAA website, this was the only time that North Kansas City was not the one seed, so this may have been the year they took a loss.
- ↑ The 2001 program shows a cumulative record of 4-6 for North County for their appearances in 1998 and 1999. They finished in second place in 1998 and fourth place in 1999, meaning they went 2-1 in the prelims one year and 1-2 the other year.
- ↑ The 2001 program shows a cumulative record of 5-3 for Francis Howell North for their appearances in 1998 and 1999. They finished in third place in 1999. If seeding is correctly inferred for both the 1998 and 1999 tournaments, they would have been 4-1 in 1999, leaving a record of 1-2 for 1998.
