The 1999 MSHSAA State Championship was held May 8, 1999 at Rock Bridge High School in Columbia.

Information on this page is reconstructed from limited available data and may not be completely accurate. Known team records are inferred from the 2001 state program, which listed the years each school participated in the tournament and cumulative records for 1996-99. Classifications for teams that did not make the top four brackets are inferred from the earliest available enrollment data (from 2000-02) and known classifications in other years.

Playoff brackets from the MSHSAA website are assumed to display the semifinal games as 1v4 and 3v2, in that order top-to-bottom. This might not be accurate, as the 2001 state program notes that only two schools had ever upset the #1 seed in bracket play throughout 1996-99, but if the MSHSAA website brackets consistently list teams as 1v4 and 3v2, there was a third #4 over #1 upset in 1998.

Known Individual Totals

Andy Wehrman, North Kansas City senior, answered 92 tossups correctly (18.4/game), second-most all time behind his brother Mike, who had 133 in 1997.

No other player answered more than 70 tossups correctly. The Class 1A record at the time was 55 tossups set in 1998, so no player in Class 1A answered that many tossups correctly.

Records and notes

  • After the same four schools won their classes at the first three state championships, Priory became the fifth school to win its first state championship, in Class 3. Cuba was undefeated in the first three Class 3 championships, but did not win their district in 1999.
  • Mound City, Richland, and North Kansas City extended their championship streaks to four years, which will remain tied for the third longest streak (along with Ladue from 2011-2014) through at least 2028. Richland later extended their streak to six before failing to reach the playoffs in 2002, then broke their own record with seven more championships from 2003-2009.
  • Mound City went undefeated through the first four state championships. They took their first loss in the preliminary rounds the next year.
  • North Kansas City scored 2260 points over five rounds, fourth all time to date, behind NKC in 1997, and Cuba in 1996 and 1998.
  • Priory scored 2045 points over five rounds, eighth all time to date.

  1. The 2001 program shows a cumulative record of 10-8 for Pilot Grove for their appearances in 1996 through 1999. 2-1 assumes the listed seeding is accurate.
  2. The 2001 program shows a cumulative record of 2-9 for Koshkonong for their appearances in 1997 through 1999. Finishing in fourth place means they most likely went 2-3 this year, leaving a record of 0-3 for each of the other two appearances.
  3. The 2001 program shows a cumulative record of 7-7 for Union Star for their appearances in 1996 through 1999. Their third place finish in 1996 was their only final four appearance over that time, so they won three or four games over their three other appearances. If Thomas Jefferson was the #2 seed, their confirmed 2-1 record means a twelfth win must be accounted for: either Union Star went 2-1 and missed the playoffs, or Norborne went 1-2.
  4. The 2001 program shows a cumulative record of 6-7 for Norborne for their appearances in 1997 through 1999. Norborne finished in third place in 1997 and 1998 and did not make the final four in 1999. They most likely went 3-2 in 1997 and 1998, and 0-3 in 1999.
  5. The 2001 program shows a cumulative record of 7-3 for North Platte for their appearances in 1998 and 1999. They finished in second place in 1998 and third place in 1999, meaning they went 3-0 in the prelims one year and 2-1 the other year. 3-0 is assumed based on the website bracket implying North Platte was the two seed in 1998 and the one seed in 1999.
  6. The 2001 program shows a cumulative record of 19-1 for Richland for their appearances from 1996 through 1999. Assuming seeding was inferred correctly from the website bracket, this was the only year Richland was not the #1 seed, so this may be the year they lost a prelim game.
  7. The 2001 program shows a cumulative record of 6-4 for Elsberry for their appearances in 1998 and 1999. They finished in third place in 1998, and enough information is available to determine they had a 3-2 record that year. With a second place finish this year, that leaves a preliminary record of 2-1.
  8. The 2001 program shows a cumulative record of 2-4 for East Buchanan for their appearances in 1997 and 1999. It is possible they could have gone 2-1 this year and 0-3 the other, especially if Richland went 2-1.
  9. The 2001 program shows a cumulative record of 2-4 for Bernie for their appearances in 1997 and 1999. It is possible they could have gone 2-1 this year and 0-3 the other, especially if Richland went 2-1.
  10. The 2001 program shows a cumulative record of 1-8 for Purdy for their appearances in 1996, 1997, and 1999.
  11. The 2001 program shows a cumulative record of 5-11 for Lockwood for their appearances in 1996 through 1999. They finished fourth in 1996 and second in 1997, so they most likely went 2-3 in 1996, 3-2 in 1997, and 0-3 in 1998 and 1999.
  12. The 2001 program shows a cumulative record of 4-4 for Pembroke Hill for their appearances in 1997 and 1999. If Pembroke Hill was the 1 seed as assumed from the website bracket, they probably went 4-1 overall, but may have gone 3-2.
  13. The 2001 program shows a cumulative record of 9-7 for Priory for their appearances in 1996 through 1999.
  14. The 2001 program shows a cumulative record of 12-8 for Lexington for their appearances in 1996 through 1999.
  15. The 2001 program shows a cumulative record of 2-4 for School of the Osage for their appearances in 1998 and 1999.
  16. The 2001 program shows a cumulative record of 3-5 for Clark County for their appearances in 1996 and 1999.
  17. The 2001 state program shows North Kansas City had a record of 19-1 from 1996-99. If seeding can be inferred reliably from the MSHSAA website, the loss is assumed to have occurred in 1998, when NKC was the 3 seed.
  18. The 2001 program shows a cumulative record of 5-3 for Francis Howell North for their appearances in 1998 and 1999. They finished in third place in 1999. If seeding is correctly inferred for both the 1998 and 1999 tournaments, they would have been 4-1 in 1999, leaving a record of 1-2 for 1998. However, the seeding in 1998 would require Francis Howell North to go 2-1 in 1998 to account for all twelve wins and would make Blue Springs 3-0 in 1999, so it is possible Francis Howell North went 2-1 and the listed seeding here is incorrect.
  19. The 2001 program shows a cumulative record of 7-3 for Blue Springs for their appearances in 1998 and 1999. They finished in third place in 1998 and second place in 1999, meaning they went 3-0 in the prelims one year and 2-1 the other year. If seeding is accurate for 1998, Blue Springs must have gone 2-1 that year, 3-0 this year, and the listed seeding here is incorrect.
  20. The 2001 program shows a cumulative record of 4-6 for North County for their appearances in 1998 and 1999. They finished in second place in 1998 and fourth place in 1999, meaning they went 2-1 in the prelims one year and 1-2 the other year.
  21. The 2001 program shows a cumulative record of 4-4 for Webb City for their appearances in 1996 and 1999. They either went 3-0 in the prelims in 1996 or missed the playoffs with a 2-1 record in 1999.
  22. The 2001 program shows a cumulative record of 3-5 for Lafayette for their appearances in 1996 and 1999. They most likely went 3-2 in 1996 and 0-3 in 1999.
