Quizbowl on the Internet

Zoom is a proprietary videotelephony software program developed by Zoom Video Communications, and released in 2011.

Use in Quiz Bowl

The program gained widespread usage across disciplines and activities as a result of the COVID-19 Pandemic, and related containment measures. Quiz Bowl was widely impacted due to travel rules and lockdowns in the early pandemic, and as a result adopted Zoom for some tournaments due to the rules. While tournaments have increasingly returned to in-person formats, some tournaments and tournament mirrors still use video chat services such as Zoom.

Use of Zoom

Zoom and other tournaments are commonly used in tandem with Buzzin.live, a substitute for live buzzers. Some have praised the use of Zoom in tournaments as it's video sharing capabilities can well capture a team, while being able to capture a team's surroundings to lessen cheating potential. Others have criticized its usage, for its known cybersecurity issues, compared to other platforms such as Discord.
