Moline High School is a public high school in northwestern Illinois, apart of the Quad Cities, bordering Iowa along the Mississippi River. They compete in Class 2A, the "large school" division of the Illinois High School Association.
For much of their history, the Maroons were among the most successful quiz bowl programs in the region. Moline's best era was during the late 1990's & early 2000's. Most notably the team won the 1999 Masonic tournament, beating New Trier in a hotly contested Championship Match marred by horrible questions. During these years, the Maroons were coached by IHSSBCA Hall of Fame coach, Nick Pitz. Under Pitz' leadership, the Maroons were very active in the quiz bowl community, actively travelling to tournaments across the State and hosting its signature Fresh/Soph Tournament. Coach Pitz also was active in the greater coaching community, coached Team Illinois, and later became a well-respected staffer at major State tournaments.
During Pitz' tenure, the Maroons were one of the more active teams travelling to Fresh-Soph tournaments around the State in addition to Varsity tournaments. In 2011, the tournament was renamed the Curtis Butterfield Memorial Tournament, in honor of former Moline teacher & assistant coach. The tournament was again renamed to the Butterfield-Pitz Memorial Tournament in 2024 in memory of Coach Pitz who passed away in 2023.
Moline was the first customer of a Buzzersystems.com lockout system.
