The 1996 MSHSAA State Championship was held May 4, 1996 at Stephens College in Columbia. It was the first Academic Competition championship sponsored by MSHSAA after assuming responsibility for the activity from the Missouri Academic Association.
Information on this page is reconstructed from limited available data and may not be completely accurate. Known team records are inferred from the 2001 state program, which listed the years each school participated in the tournament and cumulative records for 1996-99.
Playoff brackets from the MSHSAA website normally display the semifinal games as 1v4 and 3v2, in that order top-to-bottom. However, each bracket shows the teams assumed to be the 1 and 3 seeds as winning every semifinal match in 1996, so these brackets may not reflect seeding. As a result of this uncertainty, seeding is not included below, but the final four participants are listed in seeding order if the normal assumption is correct.
Schedule
Eight teams in each class advanced to the state tournament by winning district tournaments in April. Each team played three preliminary rounds against pre-determined opponents, with the top four teams advancing to a single-elimination bracket. This schedule was used for the state tournament every year from 1996-2019.
Teams not advancing to playoffs with unknown classifications
The earliest enrollment data available is for the 2000-02 classification cycle. Teams are listed in increasing enrollment based on those numbers, but actual classification in 1996 cannot be confirmed from available data. For example, Lockwood was in Class 2, but their MSHSAA enrollment was 162 for 2000-02, while the smallest of the schools listed below had an enrollment of 185 at that time.
The smallest of these schools in 1996 was in Class 1, while the remaining three schools were in Class 2.

No individual totals are known. The 2001 state program lists all-time records down to 71 correct tossups, so either no individual answered more than 70 tossups correctly, or individual statistics from this year were not included in the record book.
Josh Malecki reports that he and Tod Palmer from Raytown, along with Mike and Andy Wehrman from North Kansas City, were recognized among the top 8 individuals in Class 4A.
Records and notes
- Cuba's 640 points in round 2 was the all-time single game record until Ladue averaged 672 points per game in 2012, surpassing the single-game record three times that year.
- Cuba's 2360 points over five rounds was surpassed by North Kansas City the next year, but remained the Class 3 record until Savannah scored 2585 points in 2004.
- Mound City's 2180 points over five rounds was the Class 1 record until they surpassed their own record with 2480 points in 2012.
- Mound City's 485 points in the semifinals was the Class 1 single-game record until Koshkonong scored 530 points in a game in 2001.
