Leaking Incident

In 2026, Samin was involved in a major quizbowl misconduct incident related to set security violations. While writing for MONSTER, he read questions from the set a public Discord server prior to its release, prompting reports to the Quizbowl Misconduct Committee and subsequent sanctions from NAQT. Following these sanctions, Asif escalated the situation by sending messages to an editor threatening to leak the set unless unspecified demands were met within three days. He additionally accused other writers on the set of similar violations of question security publicly (with no cause).

After the set team took steps to protect the material, including pursuing copyright registration and issuing a formal warning, Asif further escalated by leaking a separate set, HISTONE, which he had head-edited. The set was scheduled to be mirrored by other teams, including by Eric Mukherjee's USN team - Asif posted the set publicly in direct response to Eric's email warning against further leaking, seemingly out of spite. Eric also served as a writer for HISTONE, writing a substantial portion of the science and the third-most questions of any writer.

Asif's actions disrupted planned tournaments and caused financial, logistical, and emotional harm to hosts and collaborators,, drew widespread condemnation within the quizbowl community, and led to additional reports to governing bodies and school officials. In response, Samin posted a self-serving, likely insincere apology, which was mostly rejected by the community. He was subsequently permanently removed from the Seven Lakes quizbowl team.
