Quizbowl competition for middle schools has increased in prevalence since the early 2010s, and multiple state associations are dedicated to it, particularly in Illinois, Oklahoma, Upstate New York, and a few others.
In the absence of good-quality middle school tournaments, some middle school programs, such as Longfellow, have historically taken teams to high school tournaments to varying levels of success.
NAQT produced its first middle school set, MS-01, in 2011, and hosted the first annual MSNCT, won by Kealing, that same year. NAQT now produces four regular middle school sets each year in addition to the MSNCT set. The MSNCT now has a field size of 144 teams, more than half of the 272 team HSNCT field.
The CMST was a set produced each year for four years beginning with 2009-10.
The bad quizbowl National Academic League still exists, and Academic Hallmarks provides many questions to tournaments nationwide.
Questions Galore, Questions Unlimited, and Avery Enterprises all formerly supplied middle school questions; all are now part of the LIQBA, which runs a Middle School division at the Quiz Bowl National Championships, replacing the Middle School division at the NAC.
National History Bowl also has a middle school division, which includes an annual national championship tournament. The United States Academic Bee and Bowl is a David Madden founded organization running pyramidal tournaments exclusively for middle and elementary school students.
