Records and notes
- The same four schools won state championships for the third consecutive year, dating back to the first tournament in 1996. This streak ended the next year when Cuba did not advance past districts.
- If the brackets on the MSHSAA website consistently list the semifinal matches as 1v4 and 3v2, this was the first time that a one seed was defeated in the playoff bracket (Marquette in Class 4A). The 2001 state program notes that only two schools had upset a one seed from 1996-99, but if the website reliably shows seeding as assumed, there were actually three, with two more occurring in 1999.

- ↑ The 2001 state program shows North Kansas City had a record of 19-1 from 1996-99. If seeding can be inferred reliably from the MSHSAA website, this was the only time that North Kansas City was not the one seed, so this is most likely the year they took a loss.
