The 2020-21 season saw the first-ever MSHSAA realignment for Scholar Bowl.

High schools were formerly divided into 4 classes based on the size of their student bodies ("adjusted" for certain factors). Starting in 2021, there are now 6 classes, with fewer schools in each class. Each class is split geographically into 8 districts; like before, the winner of each district plays an adjacent district's winner at Sectionals to determine who advances to State.

In addition, private schools' enrollments are no longer multiplied by 1.35; they now receive a boost proportional to their historical performance. Single-gender schools also no longer have their enrollments doubled.
