The Elementary and Middle School (EMS) Division of the National History Bee and Bowl operates tournaments for elementary and middle school students. In February 2016, the running of the elementary and middle school division was transferred to ACE, in an arrangement planned to last until the end of the 2018-2019 school year.

Format

Until the transfer of the EMS Division to ACE, the format of the History Bowl was similar to that of its high school counterpart. Since the EMS division's transfer to ACE, only teams of between 3 and 5 players are allowed to compete in the History Bowl. ACE introduced several changes, one of which was renaming tossup questions "All-Buzz" questions.

The History Bee's format differs from the high school format in that it begins with an intramural competition, which selects which students take an online qualifying exam in order to participate in regional bees. Students finishing in the top half of regional bees advance to nationals, which was attended by over 1,000 students in 2016. After the EMS Division transferred to ACE, the Middle School History Bee was split into separate 7th Grade, and 8th Grade divisions. A separate Elementary division had existed since 2013.

The two events were incorporated into the National History Fair by ACE beginning in 2016, after the addition of multiple side events, expanding the national championships into a four-day event.
