General Information

Fairview High School is a 9-12 public high school in rural northeast Cullman County, Alabama. Fairview's club president is Brett Hogan. Fairview is coached by Eric Vest.

Coaches

Brenda Scott and Dianne Bailey co-coached the team throughout the 1980s and early 1990s. Vicki Skelley maintained a long stint as the team's coach until her retirement in May 2014.

Eric Vest became the team's faculty sponsor in August 2014.

However, senior club president Brett Hogan is completely in charge of team affairs and handles all quizbowl-related duties for Fairview.

History

Fairview's first quiz bowl team was created in 1981 by Brenda Scott and Dianne Bailey. The team acquired a vast amount of titles and trophies at area community college tournaments throughout the 1980s and 1990s.

Fairview competed in ASCA competitions for some time in the 1990s but ceased doing so for over 20 years. Fairview did not become a member of ASCA again until 2017- only due to the fact that membership was a condition for Eric Vest to receive his coaching stipend (which was implemented countywide thanks to the hard work of legendary West Point coach Lee Henry).

Fairview has attended Cullman County Scholar Bowl at Wallace State every year since the team was started. The team has been almost completely inactive outside of this tournament, which has mostly been due to Vicki Skelley's and later Eric Vest's lack of effort put into coaching the team, which continued until Brett Hogan's takeover of the program in 2015.

Fairview's last win at Cullman County Scholar Bowl came in December of 2012, and since then it has been dominated completely by Lee Henry-coached West Point teams each year.

In the extremely rare cases of Fairview attending tournaments outside of Wallace State CC, the team has fared well. Fairview racked up several trophies during the 1990s when Calhoun Community College in Huntsville hosted an annual tournament, and in 2008 and 2010 the team posted impressive finishes at the Snead State Scholars Bowl tournament in Boaz.

Fairview's program has produced five players that later went on to play quizbowl for Wallace State in Hanceville under veteran coach Christine O'Leary. They are:

David Hadley (class of 2004)

Latasha Goodwin (class of 2007)

Jonna Massey (class of 2007)

Cody Woodall (class of 2009)

Zeb Dahlke (class of 2013)

Club Improvement and Return to Form

An extreme lack of good quizbowl ensued from Fairview's last Snead State Scholars Bowl appearance in 2010 until Brett Hogan was voted club president around late 2015. He then convinced his coach and teammates to attend the second iteration of West Point Rainwater Invitational on 14 May 2016 as well as to begin competing at numerous tournaments outside of the county circuit.

Brett Hogan continues to provide tournament entry fees and a ton of dedication, thus giving Fairview more opportunities to play and drastically improving the team's performances.
