The Fort Osage Novice Set (colloquially refered to as FONS) was a novice-level set produced by Fort Osage High School

Distribution

The distribution was as follows:

  • 4/4 History/Social Studies
  • 4/4 Literature
  • 4/3 Science
  • 3/3 Geography
  • 2/2 Fine Arts
  • 2/2 Religion/Mythology
  • 1/1 Math/Computer Science
  • 1/1 Current Events
  • 1/1 Trash

Controversy

FONS was not well recieved in the community. The distribution, overshoot of novice difficulty, rampant typos, and sometimes whacky answerlines were all looked down on. Instead of accepting criticism, and getting a reputeable editor(s) to look over things, Coach Malecki held his ground and cited his experience with the game, the districts composition of mostly blue collar workers and the lack of a large AP program and IB courses as a whole.

FONS V Attempted Fix & Subsequent Death

After getting involved in the national quizbowl community and hearing how disliked the school's set was, Aidan McWilliams started speaking to Coach Malecki about the national opinion, and tried to improve the set based on feedback from the community. Realizing this was alot more than the 2 of them could handle, Aidan reached out to Ganon Evans for assistance with editing, securing other reputeable editors (Matt Mitchell, Eric Mukherjee, and David Dennis all agreed to take a look over things), and finding a nice balance between Coach Malecki's ideological distro and a more accepted distro. FONS V officially ceased operations on July 20th, 2019 with "...no intentions of returning soon". As a final "Mic Drop", Coach Malecki posted a link to the "It Just Doesnt Matter" scene from Meatballs, Joe Feldman responded with a clip of Amy from Amy's baking company, applied the content to the situation by saying "Oh yeah, our set stinks and our customers hate it, as they have for years, but yeah, let's keep doing the same thing because I'm always right!", and then in closing, "Yes, it DOES REALLY MATTER to the people who are playing your set and the TDs who have to pay for these questions. So yeah, screw you too. FONS won't be missed."
