Records and notes

  • Melissa McCush's 117 tossups throughout the day was the second most by any individual to date and set the record for most tossups answered correctly by a female at the state championship in any class, also becoming the first female in tournament history to answer more than 50 tossups correctly. This also set the Class 3 record, which was previously 99 by Sean Phillips of Boonville in 2000. This total remained the Class 3 record until Samuel Lockwood of Hallsville correctly answered 136 tossups in 2018.
  • Melissa McCush's 29 tossups in the Round 2 game against Montgomery County was the second most by an individual in any game to date, setting a new Class 3 record (previously 25 by Sean Phillips in 2000). The record in all classes was 30 by Mike Wehrman in 1997.
  • As of the 2018 MSHSAA State Championship, the 2002 state championship is the most recent in which all four classes had first time champions.
    • Richland had won all six previous Class 2 championships with an overall 28-2 record, but failed to advance to the playoffs. Richland would not lose another Class 2 championship until 2010, claiming 13 of the first 14 Class 2 titles.
    • Thomas Jefferson and Savannah have since collected more championships than any other school in their respective classes.
