Stats

2002 NAC was won by Irmo over New Orleans phase winner St. John's 435-390 in a rematch of the HSNCT final, then DC phase winner Horace Greeley 495-275 in the overall final to take their second straight irrelevant title. They were also the fourth team named "the greatest ever" by Chip Beall.

Tournament Events

According to the tournament summary, "Brock Putman, coach of Team Waramaug from New Milford, CT, was so sure his team would not make the playoffs, that he had booked a return flight for early Sunday morning." New Milford was named "Most Improved Team" for moving from 94th in 2001 to 16th.

Central-Macon and St. Thomas were both named "Rookie of the Year."

Beall's tournament summary for this year falsely claimed that Ithaca had finished second in 1990, the last year prior to 2002 that they attended the NAC, though all other evidence (including previous Beall summaries) indicates that White Plains was the actual second-place team that year. Beall confused White Plains with Ithaca because both were New York teams who were knocked out of the 1990 tournament by eventual champion Collegiate, though the Ithaca game was in the round of 16 while the White Plains game was the final.

Irmo missed the first six questions of a prelim game with Caddo Magnet due to "loitering in the lobby," but went on to win 480-190.

Questions

Some of the questions from the tournament:

"These title characters of a classic operatic work are a bunch of mythical dwarves. What are they called?"

"One of Hercules' Twelve Labors was to take what garment from Amazon queen Hippolyta?"

"How did humans mess things up in the Everglades?"

Quote a proverb or saying that appears to contradict the given maxim. The first word is provided: "Don't judge a book by its cover. (Clothes)." Answer: "Clothes make the man."

"Why do crystals not form in obsidian?"

"Timber giant Weyerhaeuser uses this practice of removing all trees in one area, though admitting it's controversial. Name the practice."

"op artist Andy Warhol created many of his pictures by using which stencil process?"
