Elkhorn South High School is a public high school in western Omaha, Nebraska. It competes in ESU3, which holds a state tournament qualifier for much of the Omaha metropolitan area, and a variety of NAQT tournaments across Nebraska and Iowa alongside bad quizbowl tournaments in Eastern Nebraska. It hosted the Elkhorn South Winter Invitational in 2024.
Elkhorn South, alongside district neighbors and rivals Elkhorn and Elkhorn North, is a member of the "Elkhorn three" which have dominated Nebraskan quizbowl over the past decade, with at least one of the three schools having won every local and state competition any of them have competed at since at least 2023. The "Elkhorn three" have been Nebraska's only representatives at the HSNCT since Creighton Prep in 2018 and players from each of the three schools have been Nebraska's only representatives at the IPNCT.
Upon the establishment of the Nebraska Invitational, a biannual tournament hosted by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Elkhorn South won undefeated and qualified for the 2023 HSNCT for the first time ever. Since then, Elkhorn South has qualified for every HSNCT thereafter, qualifying for the tournament the most times in Nebraskan history (5, 2023-2026). At the 2024 HSNCT, a team consisting of co-captains Mason Evans and Rachel Wu, Tobias Tsai, Frances Bernhard, Drew Veomett, and future captain Atlas Roos qualified for the knockouts for the first and only time in Nebraskan history.
In 2024, future captain Sebastian Goeller established a series of school-recognized awards earned from statistics tracked at all non-NAQT tournaments Elkhorn South attends. These awards are awarded for most points (awarding top three with "Golden Buzzer", "Silver Buzzer", and "Bronze Buzzer"), most buzzes attempted (awarded the "Top Negster Award", colloquially the "Tobias Tsai Top Negster Award"), highest buzz ratio of correct divided by attempted buzzes (awarded the "Most Efficient Player Award"), and most points per game (awarded the "Player of the Year Award", colloquially the "Wevans Player of the Year Award" after a portmanteau of the last names of former co-captains Mason Evans and Rachel Wu). These awards, collectively known as the Elkhorn South Awards, are awarded at the end of the Nebraska quiz bowl season, typically in early May before the HSNCT.
